GETTING STARTED

A Run N Gun is a timed event combining distance running (5K–10K) with precision shooting stages. Competitors carry all their own gear — rifle, pistol, magazines, and ammunition — and run a cross-country course, stopping at designated shooting stages along the way. Your final score combines running time with shooting stage performance. Think of it as a modern-day biathlon on rugged natural terrain.
No. Competitors range from beginners to experts. Many first-time competitors are recreational shooters who want to challenge themselves in a new format. Safety is the top priority — if you can safely handle a rifle and pistol, you can compete. Range officers are present at every stage to assist. The community is welcoming and supportive of new participants.
If you can safely handle a rifle and pistol, you're ready. You don't need to be a competitive marksman or a marathon runner. Most competitors are everyday shooters who enjoy testing themselves outdoors. Short course options are available at many events for those who prefer a less demanding run distance.
All registration is through PractiScore. Search for "Burial Mound" or "The Burial Mound Event Center" to find upcoming events. Events sell out consistently, so register early when registration opens. Follow our Facebook page for registration announcements.

GEAR & EQUIPMENT

Minimum gear requirements: centerfire rifle, centerfire pistol, loaded magazines, ammunition (plan for 2x the minimum round count listed for the event), eye protection, ear protection, and water. A sling for your rifle is highly recommended. Most competitors also carry a hydration pack or water bottles and a cell phone for emergency communication.
Running shoes or trail runners are essential — you'll be covering miles on uneven terrain including fields, hills, woods, and county roads. Wear athletic clothing appropriate for the weather. A plate carrier or chest rig is optional but common for carrying magazines and gear during the run. Dress in layers for winter events. Check the weather forecast for Pawnee, Oklahoma before heading out.

EVENT DAY

Check-in typically opens at 7:00 AM. Plan to arrive early to sign waivers, confirm your registration, and pick up your bib and t-shirt. The mandatory safety briefing begins at 8:00 AM — attendance is required before you can run the course. Give yourself extra time if it's your first event.
Plan for a full day. Most events run from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, though your individual time on course depends on your pace and course length. After all competitors finish, there's an awards ceremony and sponsor prize drawings. The Twilight Biathlon (night events) has a different schedule — typically Friday and Saturday evenings with competitor releases starting at dusk.
The $45 entry fee for the Winter Run N Gun includes a meal. Past events have featured on-site BBQ from S&M Smoken BBQ. Major events with higher entry fees ($145) also include a meal and t-shirt. Bring your own water and snacks for the course — staying hydrated is critical, especially during summer events.
